Complete Watch Order Guide
MCU Watch Order Before Avengers: Doomsday
Updated August 2026 · Every required title in sequence, stop points explained, the X-Men homework, and a minimum-viable speedrun
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters December 18, 2026. It is the MCU's largest crossover since Endgame - drawing in the New Avengers from Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, Namor and Talokan, and for the first time, the original Fox X-Men cast: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, all reprising roles they originated over two decades ago.
That last element is what makes most watch-order guides incomplete. Preparing for Doomsday isn't a standard MCU marathon - it reaches into the Netflix Daredevil series, the 2026 Disney+ slate, and a Fox X-Men catalogue stretching back to 2000. This guide covers every required title, in the right sequence, with precise stop points and honest guidance on what you can safely skip.

How long does it take?
The complete required path - every film and show with a direct connection to Doomsday - runs approximately 230 hours. At first glance that's daunting; on a calendar it's manageable. From August 1, 2026, it works out to roughly 11 hours per week, or one film most weekday evenings with a double feature on the weekend.
If the full path isn't realistic, there are two shorter options. A films-only run covers roughly 95 hours and misses little of what Doomsday references. And if you're starting in November, the 15-title speedrun below gets you premiere-ready in approximately 33 hours - one committed long weekend.
Release order or timeline order?
Release order - and this is the guide's one firm recommendation. The MCU films were written for audiences who had already seen everything released before them. Reveals, callbacks, and emotional payoffs are all calibrated to that sequence. Captain America: The First Avenger is set in 1943, but it was made in 2011 for viewers who already understood the modern MCU it delivers Steve into. Watching it first in chronological order flattens the landing.
The only exception the tracker makes is Black Widow, played immediately after Civil War - where its story is actually set. That single adjustment improves both films and costs nothing.
The timeline order view is a rewatcher's tool, not a first-watch recommendation.

The stop points explained
Three entries require a mid-series pause to prevent one title from spoiling another:
Black Widow post-credits: The post-credits scene takes place years after the film. Skip it when you first watch; the tracker marks exactly when to return.
Hawkeye episodes 1–5, then pause: Both Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home reach their climax at Christmas 2024. A plot thread from NWH informs episode 6 in a way that lands better if you've seen NWH first.
VisionQuest - watch last despite being set earlier: The show is set in-universe around 2019 but airs in October 2026. It was written for viewers who have seen everything else. Watch it in release position, not timeline position.
